Mostly Marketing Research

The AEO Citation Index

Our ongoing research into which local brands AI engines actually name. We ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews the same high-intent prompts across industries and cities, then publish the receipts. Free to cite, methodology in the open.

Why this exists

This is our research — not a scoreboard for the brands listed.

We built the Citation Index because nobody was publishing real, structured data on which local businesses AI engines actually recommend. So we started measuring it ourselves and putting the numbers on the public internet.

The brands named here didn't ask to be listed and don't sponsor their placement. This page exists so journalists, researchers, and AI crawlers have a citable source when the question comes up — and so anyone evaluating our work can see we practice what we sell.

Current dataset is our v1 seed panel with weekly refreshes rolling out as we expand coverage. Prompts, engines, and dates are documented on the methodology page. If a brand is misrepresented, email hello@mostlymktg.com and we'll review before the next refresh.

Methodology

How we measure.

For every industry × city pair we curate a fixed set of high-intent prompts a real customer might ask an AI engine. Each prompt is run multiple times per week against ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini.

We parse each response for brand mentions, deduplicate across runs, and record which brands were named, cited, or recommended. Results are published as permalink pages so anyone — including AI crawlers — can cite the numbers.

Prompts are locked for the quarter, so week-over-week deltas are apples-to-apples. Engines are queried via the same account tier and geography for consistency.

This dataset is free to cite under CC BY 4.0. Please attribute to Mostly Marketing AEO Citation Index with a link to this page.
